Powerful Pexster: Pioneering Breaking, Building Peace
Tony “Powerful Pexster” Lopez (breaker) helped shape an early blueprint for power-move breaking. Today, he uses dance, mentorship, and cultural education, to help young people build discipline, confidence, and positive futures. Through the Beat the Street Initiative and Peace Factory framework, he promotes crime prevention, peaceful competition, and opportunity worldwide.
Peace Through Movement. Purpose Through Culture
From the Bronx to a Global Mission
Pexster’s journey began in Bronx schools, dance circles, and community programs. The guiding principle was simple: instead of fighting or being drawn into crime and violence, we danced—redirecting energy into creativity, discipline, and peaceful competition. That experience inspired a global mission to advance breaking as an art form, competitive sport, educational resource, and pathway to opportunity.
Vision: Communities where young people choose movement over conflict, and transform energy into creativity, discipline, and achievement.
Mission: To partner with schools, public agencies, nonprofits, and companies to expand inclusive breaking programs, alternative education, career development, and peaceful youth engagement.
Breaking Across Generations, 1980 Article
Tony and fellow JHS 143 students demonstrate Breaking, first coined by a professor in this 1980 article, for residents of the Hebrew Home in Riverdale, Bronx, N.Y for the Aged—an early example of dance connecting youth, elders, and community.
The Power to Move Forward
Pexster helped expand breaking’s power-move vocabulary through backspins, floats, windmills, sweeps, freezes, and original combinations. He connected strength and momentum with footwork, musical timing, transitions, and disciplined performance.
A power move also represents a positive life decision: choosing positive choices. Creativity over conflict and directing energy toward better outcomes. Through certain crime-prevention measures, discipline, practice, confidence, unity, and personal achievement.
The Art of Breaking
The Art of Breaking is the creative, athletic, and cultural discipline of Bronx-born breaking — a fusion of dance, battle strategy, musicality, and personal expression. It evolved into a global art form. It became a foundational element of hip-hop culture, fashion, and personal expression. Today, breaking creates pathways into theater, film, choreography, education, fitness, entrepreneurship, and international sport—while preserving the creativity and community spirit of the original dance circle.
The Peace Factory: A Creative Crime-Prevention Framework
The Peace Factory framework turns hip-hop culture into structured youth development. It combines breaking, visual art, music, mentorship, Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), career exploration, and peaceful competition to support crime and violence prevention measures.
The program welcomes young people of all abilities, including those with learning differences or emotional, behavioral, and mental-health challenges. Creative instruction can open pathways into dance, design, media, and music, while hands-on workshops introduce skilled trades and connect participants with certified training and apprenticeships creating opportunities for employment.
